Day 1 (of 2) in Cuzco.

We have two days in Cusco, to allow for the optional trip to Machu Picchu. I stuck with my decision not to go, and instead to work on the bike.

After not eating yesterday I enjoyed a large breakfast at the hotel. I then spent a few hours on the computer catching up on managing my photos and this blog. A group of us then set out to wander round the main square and the market outside the hotel. Today is a big religious event and a life size model of a bloke on a cross was being paraded around the main square, under the supervision of large numbers of military men and women.

We then jumped in a little taxi and headed to an area known to have motorbike and hardware shops. After stocking up on bits and pieces, ready to work on the bikes tomorrow, we also managed to get two new compressors and found somewhere that can weld my cracked aluminium sub frame.

After getting a cab back to the main square it was clear the local celebrations had really got going. We were trying to move against the flow and it took around 60 minutes to walk the 200m back to the hotel.

After touring round the local bike and hardware shops, and joining the crowds celebrating it feels as though we immersed ourselves in the city a little bit, something that the pace of this trip does not easily allow.
