We arrived in Ushuaia on Monday afternoon after flying from Gatwick via Madrid, Buenos Aires and Calafate. Unfortunately we are still waiting for the bikes to arrive and our expected departure date is now Monday.
Ushuaia is on the Beagle Channel and surrounded by snow capped mountains. We took a boat trip along the channel this morning and in addition to the seals, cormorants and penguins we think we spotted the ship carrying our container coming in to port.
Unfortunately the ship is now moored a few hundred meters out to sea and it is a national holiday tomorrow (Thursday), making it unlikely we'll be leaving before Monday.
When we arrived on Monday Nick spoke for a few minutes, describing some of the logistics but also the challenge we all face. Many of us have read the blogs or talked to people who did the trip last year, I think it is fair to say there is some trepidation among the group. When we do set off we'll be going over the Garibaldi pass before hitting Route 40 - known for very strong winds and loose gravel.
Despite being here a few days, the lack of bikes makes it all feel quite unreal, we could just be on holiday rather than at the start of a 10 week adventure.
My little Nokia S40 phone is also refusing to connect to a network, it might not support the local band. I'm also yet to locate a suitable container to carry the additional fuel I'm going to need to get between fuel stations.

Sam - Loving the Blog! Hope you boys are not get to fat waiting in ushuaia with the tempting all-you-can-eat buffets in town!! Really looking forward to following your adventure through south america covering similar territory to my trip last year.
ReplyDeleteHope you boys are able to hit the road soon, blow off the cobwebs and have a safe journey. I'll be following your progress !
